BOLT TORQUING & TENSIONING
In most Industries, pre-commissioning and maintenance schedules are placing an increased emphasis on 'flange management' from the design stage, with the objective of a 'leak free' start up. ZERBINA ENGINEERING has the complete range of equipment & written procedures to tighten joints to the desired tolerances in a controlled and safe manner for the following industries : |
Petrochemical |
Diesel Engines |
Offshore |
Hydraulic Presses |
Steel |
Wind Turbines |
Power Generation |
Mining |

Hydraulic bolt torquing is the more familiar technique for the prevention of leaks in bolted assemblies such as pipe flanges. Given the wide range of sizes and specifications, it is important to choose the right tool and the right application :
The hydraulic torque wrench is simple to use,
but it does have speed and accuracy limitations.
It is the varying friction between the threads of
the stud and the nut, and between the nut face and the flange, that causes inconsistencies between the applied force and the residual bolt load.
Surface finish, lubrication and material type, all change the effects of friction. |
Hydraulic bolt tensioning is a semi-automated process, substantially faster than bolt torquing, and delivering a precise residual bolt load. Bolt tensioning enables a hydraulic load (the applied load), to act upon the stud bolt. The effect causes the stud bolt to elongate. This extension is retained by simply tightening the nut. Given the hydraulic load was calculated to cause the stud bolt to retain a specified residual load when the tensioner is released, there is an inherent high degree of accuracy and repeatability not available with bolt torquing. The most accurate residual bolt loading and uniform compression of a joint gasket, is achieved by multi-stud tensioning. In a gasketted flange, no less than 50% of the bolts should be tensioned simultaneously, with 100% tensioning providing the greatest accuracy and shortest assembly times.
The integration of flange management with our Nitrogen/Helium leak detection and other services can produce substantial reductions in manpower, interfaces to be managed, and lead to a more efficient and cost effective plant start-up.
ZERBINA ENGINEERING owns the latest unit of TENTEC Bolt Tensioning Equipment and follow a standard operating procedure when performing such jobs at clients’ site.
The CTST range of topside bolt tensioning tools that we own consist of 6 base tools covering bolt sizes from 3/4" to 4"(M16 to M100). |
The tools are designed to fit on to most ANSI B16.5, ANSI B16.47 Series 1, MSS-SP44, API-6A and API-17D flanges. |
Each base tool can be converted for use on a different bolts size by the use of special conversion kits. |
ZERBINA ENGINEERING uses Tentec software that allows to manage and rapidly calculate bolt tensioner pressures. The Bolt Load Software has been designed with the philosophy of minimal input, maximum output. Documentation for multiple bolted joint projects can be created very quickly with minimal operator input. The software package contains data for all the standard bolted flanges.
The Bolt Tightening Software will in most
cases recommend a suitable bolt stress, based
on the bolt loads specified in the different
bolted flange specifications. The software a
also has a feature which allows it to be used
on non-standard bolted joints. In "Manual
Mode" the user enters important bolted joint information, such as bolt diameter, clamp length and target bolt load and the software will select a suitable tool and generate the correct pressure and tightening sequence to apply
to the selected tool. The software generates a live bolt stress graph so that the user can see at a glance what proportion of the bolts tightening capacity is being used.

Features & Benefits of our Bolt Tensioning System:
High quality polyurethane seals for reliable, leak free operation |
Powerful bolt load capacity |
15mm Ram Stroke |
Only 6 Base tools to cover bolt sizes 3/4” to 4” |
Supplied with Nut Rotating Sockets, no need for drilled nuts. |
Over stroke pressure safety device |
Manufactured from high strength steel for long life. |
Easy Hose assembly with Tentec Link Hose System |
LINK HOSE SYSTEM:
We offer a single assembly called a ‘Link hose’. This length of flexible high pressure hose, fitted with male and female quick connect couplings at opposite ends is fast and an economical method of connecting multiple tensioners together - the number of hoses required is the same as the number of tools to be linked - a simple formula to remember.
SEAL RELIABILITY : |
The seal exhibits a much lower coefficient of friction than nitrile seals used in many other hydraulic bolt tensioners. This benefit, in conjunction with a special anti-extrusion device, allows the tool piston/ram to be returned to its closed position with minimal effort.
